Momentum was initiated as a follow on to the Activity Week. We currently have 175 members in Momentum who are invited to come along to a number of events throughout the year. The aim is to develop relationships with the young people and gradually integrate them into a church youth group. The mission statement for the project is “Focused Forwards…Not Backwards”, which has come from Philippians 3:12-14 “…I know that I have not yet reached that goal, but there is one thing I always do. Forgetting the past, I keep straining towards what is ahead…” We want to help the young people learn about the gospel and gain “momentum” towards Christ, focusing on him in their future.

We have found Momentum events to vary in popularity, from the very successful all-night Lock-In to paintballing to our regular café event, Fuse. Although some events haven’t been as successful as others, we have found that a core group of young people come along to every event and we have now begun to develop relationships with these young people. They are much more open and happy to talk about Christianity as they feel secure in the Momentum environment.

The hope for Momentum is that young people will feel it is a safe environment for them to talk through issues and, with church youth leaders helping, for us to run various events so there will be a familiar face at a youth group if they decide to try one out!
